Good preparation at this stage can often mean the difference between a successful crop and a disappointing one. Our handy tips below should help you stay one step ahead. 1. Start digging, clearing and tidying your vegetable patches. Clearing away stalks, debris and other rotting matter from the previous season is a must, as this is where pests, insects and diseases often lurk. 2. If you havent already done so, its time to set up your raised beds. If youre new to raised bed gardening, try to choose a reasonably flat area and avoid places heavily shaded by houses or large trees. Leave at least 18 inches between beds and don't make them too deep - you need to be able to reach the middle from both sides for good access. 3. Put together your bed plan for which crops youll be growing over the coming season. This will allow you to factor in crop rotation, exposure, protection and growing time for your fruit and veg. 4. Browse catalogues and buy your seeds and plants 5. Set up your poly cloches and poly tunnels for pre-warming soil. Pre-warming will enable you to plant some crops as early as late February, whereas youll have to wait a further 4-6 weeks in more exposed areas. Early planting might allow you to pick early and benefit from a second crop later in the season. 6. A sudden cold snap could do serious damage to under-protected plants and shrubs. Check your plant protection and replace as necessary.
