Buyers Guide to Blowers

Hand-held leaf blower/vacuums can be extremely useful for a variety of gardening tasks:

Gathering and shredding leaves. On some models the vacuum function, like the popular Toro 51594 can reduce the leaves to a mulch at a rate of up to16:1.

Clearing out leaves and debris from difficult to get at places, such as behind the garage or shed. Adding a special extension on the Stihl petrol leaf blowers allow you to clean the debris from gutters as well. We have one customer who uses hers to clear the leaves from the cover on the swimming pool.

Clearing leaves and debris from drives and paths to prevent them from becoming slippery.

Electric or Petrol?

Electric blowers/vacuums are generally cheaper, quieter and lighter to handle, and should certainly not be seen as an inferior product. In some cases electric blowers often out-perform their petrol counterparts. The one drawback, of course, for larger gardens is that you are limited to approximately 100 ft from the power source. Machines to look out for are the AL-KO Hurricane 2400E and the Toro 51593 or 51594

Petrol blowers/vacuums are heavier but have much more flexibility and are suitable for larger gardens where it would be unfeasible to use an electric blower. The most popular is the Husqvarna 125Bx. For those with a larger estates and public parks, backpack blowers are most effective, whilst the Billy Goat walk behind leaf vacuums will make light work of large areas. With the extension hose they can also be used to collect from borders and difficult to reach places. The best value for money at the moment is the ALKO 750B, a wheeled vacuum ideally suited for the larger garden.
